A Historical Overview of Norwegian Pearl Cruise Ships

Construction of the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship began on October 3, 2005; a little over a year later, on October 15, 2006, the ship was floated out of the Werft Meyer Shipyard, ready to be introduced to the cruising industry and the world.

The ship sailed to Southampton, England to celebrate the official of entry into service and made her very first voyage with paying passengers on December 2, 2006, from Southampton to Miami, Florida.

Norwegian Pearl cruises follow the “Freestyle” cruising concept just like all of the other ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet.

This concept allows passengers to dine in a variety of restaurants without having to dress formally at times that are convenient for them. For families that have children, being able to eat when you are hungry versus eating at a pre-scheduled time, is the biggest benefit of all.

The Norwegian Pearl cruise ship is the third Jewel Class ship to be constructed out of four. The Norwegian Jewel was her predecessor in 2005 and the Norwegian Jade in 2006. The fourth Jewel Class ship that was constructed was the Norwegian Gem, which was introduced in 2007. All four of these ships have similar interior and exterior designs but offer unique amenities for passengers to enjoy.

Some of the more distinctive amenities that are available through Norwegian Pearl cruises are listed below:

•Spinnaker Lounge

•Bliss Ultra Lounge, a bowling alley/sports bar/night club complex

•Courtyard Villas that include a private-access courtyard with pool, hot tub, exercise room, sundeck, cabanas, and more.

•Two Garden Villas complete with three separate bedrooms, private garden with hot tub, and access to a private courtyard with pool.

•The ship also houses 12 bars and lounges including the Stardust Theater.

Are you interested in a cruise to the Caribbean? Perhaps, you would like to take your family on a vacation that they will never forget, a cruise to Alaska? Well, Norwegian Pearl cruises travel to both of these destinations. Caribbean-based cruises are offered several times a week whereas Alaska-based cruises are only offered at certain times of the year. The ports of call for departure for these two destination cruises are located in Miami and Seattle.

The Norwegian Pearl cruise ship has panamax dimensions which make it possible for the ship to travel through the canal lock of the Panama Canal. What does “panamax” mean? Well, it refers to the maximum dimensions that will fit through the canal lock of the Panama Canal. This size is determined by the dimensions of the lock chambers, and the depth of the water in the canal. This is crucial as a ship could get stuck within the lock if it does not have the proper dimensions.

Now that you know some of the history behind the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship, let me talk about some interesting facts that you may or may not know. To start off, Norwegian Pearl cruises are the very first cruise line to feature a bowling alley at sea. You can spend time with your children bowling a few games or if you prefer, practice your solo game while you are on your cruise.

The most interesting fact about Norwegian Pearl Cruises, in my opinion, is that Rosie O’Donnell, an American television host, stand-up comedian, actress, singer and author. She has also been a successful magazine editor and continues to be a celebrity blogger and television producer. She is famous worldwide and is the godmother of the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship. The ship was christened in a ceremony in Miami’s port on December 16, 2006.

Do you remember a massive power outage that occurred in Germany and then affected all of Europe a few years ago? Well, on the evening of November 4, 2006, the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship made its first attempt to pass under a power line on the Ems River in Germany. It is claimed that this massive power outage was a result of the attempt.

I am quite sure that with the increased popularity of the cruise industry, Norwegian Pearl cruises will continue to develop new and exciting itineraries for passengers as well as upgrade the accommodations and activities that are available onboard. It will be interesting to see what the future brings!
