The Kid’s Crew program is available on regularly scheduled hours on days that the ship is at see as well as being available on the first evening of each cruise between the hours of 8:00-10:00 p.m. On days that the cruise ship is in port, this program is available from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:30-10:30 p.m.

The increase of availability provides children aboard the ship with even more opportunities to enjoy the wide variety of creative activities that have been specifically designed for them.

Perhaps you have children in the family that vary in age? That is not a problem as all of the activities aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines are organized according to age group. Junior sailors are the group for children ages 3-5 years; activities for these young passengers are available year-round.

Fun activities include storytelling, T-shirt painting, arts and crafts, face painting, magic shows, and Circus at Sea. There is also an extensive collection of outdoor and indoor games on Norwegian Cruise Lines that provide hours of fun and amusement for younger children.

The first mates group is for children between the ages of 6-8 years and is exclusive to Norwegian Cruise Lines. Children can participate in wacky cooking classes, T-shirt painting, sing-along’s and pool parties that include root beer floats.

The kids crew program also has structured on-shore activities available such treasure hunts and sandcastle competitions on their private island. This may be something that your child will enjoy as it involves being creative.

Is your child in middle school? For children ages 9-12 years, the navigators are a group that will allow them to test their skills at Sega and video games. If your child likes to explore, Norwegian Cruise Lines will allow young sailors to explore the bridge of the cruise ship on a private tour and search for treasures on scavenger hunts. Evening activities include pajama parties, movies and camp-outs with flashlights and tents.

For parents that have teenagers, Norwegian Cruise Lines will entertain them throughout the course of the day as well as into the evening. Some fun activities that are available during the daytime are pool parties, volleyball and basketball, and a variety of trivia contests that have cool prizes attached.

When it gets dark outside, there are Broadway-style shows, line dancing, teen disco, and special theme parties.

Well, this sounds fantastic so far, but what else does it include for my children? The kids crew program through Norwegian Cruise Lines includes a plethora of supervised games, T-shirts for design painting, and a “Mom and Dad’s Night Out.” Your children will receive their very own Cruise Newsletter that outlines events that are available each day of the cruise so that they will know what is coming up and what times the activities are available.

If your child wishes to take creative cooking classes where they make pizzas or cookies, a complimentary chef’s hat is included in the program. Norwegian Cruise Lines provide autograph books and scrapbooks that make perfect mementos of your children’s cruise ship experience as well as reminding them of any new friendships they may have made.

As far as safety is concerned, your children will be constantly supervised by an exceptionally qualifies staff of trained counselors that run Norwegian Cruise Lines program for kids. Did I mention that the environment is safe and secure? The entire staff attends special training courses on team and confidence building, communication skills, safety, and working with special needs children.

A Little Bit of History on Norwegian Cruise Lines

Established over forty years ago, in 1966, Norwegian Cruise Lines has played a major role in revolutionizing the cruising industry with its relaxed attitude.

In fact, this was the very first cruise line to break new ground with the implementation of Freestyle Cruising.

Passengers were now able to enjoy a cruise without dress codes, set dining times and strict rules.

Norwegian Cruise Lines operates one of the youngest fleets in the world and includes beautiful works of art such as the Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Gem and the  Norwegian Majesty, just to name a few. For passengers that wish to take a tropical cruise, this is the cruise line for you as weekly cruises are scheduled to various areas of the Caribbean.

Throughout the 70s, Norwegian Cruise Lines continued to expand with the introduction and launch of the Southward and Sunward II ships. It was also in this same decade that the company made an executive decision and purchased Great Stirrup Cay, a private island for passengers to enjoy.

This concept had never been introduced before! Moving right along the historical time-line, Norwegian Cruise Lines purchased the M/S France in 1979 and spent more than $100 million to prepare the vessel for Caribbean cruising. For quite awhile, the France was the largest and most accommodating passenger ship that was sailing over the seas.

So, Norwegian Cruise Lines continued its evolution by doing some serious expansion of the variety of entertainment programs that were offered to passengers. They wanted to make sure that their passengers had plenty of things to keep them entertained.

Norwegian Cruise Lines continued its mass expansion throughout the 80s, with the introduction of the S/S Norway and the M/S Seaward. It also began to offer cruises to the west coast destinations which included Los Angeles and San Diego in order to be able to provide better service and access for people.

It was not until the 1990s that Norwegian Cruise Lines really began to progress into the cruise line that many people know and love today. New and improved passenger programs were introduced and the company renamed many of the ships within its fleet.

The innovation did not stop there! In 1992, Norwegian Cruise Lines introduced the M/S Dreamward which was christened by Diana Ross and was the first ship to operate from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1995, Norwegian Cruise Lines launched the first cruise line website with a newly designed home page as well as a travel agent tool to make cruise reservations even more convenient for passengers.

In 1999, Norwegian Cruise Lines became the first cruise line to offer a childrens program at sea, with the introduction of the Kid’s Crew which was available for children between the ages of two and seventeen. This program provided a wide variety of activities to keep younger passengers entertained and busy. These activities include but are not limited to circuses, crafts, parades, sports, games, stories and parties.

There are scheduled camp-outs with flashlights and tents as well as cooking classes where the kids can make pizza or pancakes with funny faces. In addition, there is a T-shirt painting class, face painting and poolside root beer floats. Does it sound like your children or teenagers will be bored?

In 2005 NCL made history by launching the largest-ever newly built American-flagged ship in over half a century with the Pride of America. The following year NCL celebrated its 40th anniversary with the launch of the Norwegian Pearl, the first cruise ship to house a bowling alley.

Six years later, in 2005, Norwegian Cruise Lines made history once again by launching the largest American-flagged ship in over half a century with the Pride of America. This ship is over 920 feet long and includes 15 guest decks with over 1,000 guest cabins. The guest capacity for this particular ship is 2,146 passengers per cruise. Wow! That is a huge ship!

To quickly review, Norwegian Cruise Lines operates one of the youngest and most successful fleets in the world that serves destinations such as Alaska, the Bahamas, South America and the Panama Canal. It continues to build on its area of strength which makes it one of the most popular cruise lines among consumers today.

Norwegian Cruise Lines show no signs of slowing down and still looks for ways in which the passenger experience can be improved and enriched. The goal is to insure that each and every passenger has a good time aboard any one of the cruises that are available. So far, it looks like Norwegian Cruise Lines is doing quite well in meeting that goal.
